The lack of speeding fines being issued in Subcouncil 7 was one of the concerns raised by ward councillors at a meeting held this week. The monthly meeting was held Wednesday, 18 March in the council chambers at the Durbanville Municipal Office Complex.
Council was discussing the Report on Activities for Traffic Services for the month of January 2026, when the concerns regarding the lack of speeding fines cropped up.
Cheryl Visser, Ward 1 councillor, indicated that speeding was something that took place in her ward almost regularly, yet no traffic fines had been issued in the period discussed, and “clearly isn’t right. Is there no way it can be investigated?”
Speeding reportedly often takes place in Plattekloof Road, Monte Vista Boulevard, Giel Basson Drive and Jip de Jager Drive.
Visser referred to the report for January, specifically to page 119, where statistics for Ward 1 showed that no speeding fines had been issued. “I know it was January and maybe it was quiet, but no speeding fines were issued. How is that possible?”
Subcouncil still had not received the report for February.
Council also requested that traffic officials attend the meeting in person to discuss the report.
Gerald Khundunyane, a representative of Traffic Services, who attended the meeting online owing to ongoing site visits, among other duties performed by traffic officers in the public domain.
Gerhard Fourie, chair, mentioned the importance of at least one traffic staffer’s attendance of these meetings. This was echoed by CAPEXIT PR councillor Karl Bodin, who had raised this concern before, calling for attendance at subcouncil level. Bodin said that way, when they are interrogating the report, they can get answers directly and engage face to face.
Khundunyane indicated that he would send feedback to the concerns raised by Visser.
Fourie also stated that he and the subcouncil manager, Lorraine Frost, would discuss attendance further to determine how the issue can be resolved going forward. “As a statutory meeting, they need to have a representative attend it,” Fourie said.
Sumaya Taliep, DA PR councillor, made mention that more than 135 000 transgressions appear in the report, but not one single arrest had been executed.
The next meeting is scheduled to take place on Wednesday 15 April.
