This week a 61-year-old man was sentenced in the Bellville Magistrates’ Court to four years’ imprisonment or pay a fine for failure to submit tax returns.
The Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation (Hawks) issued a statement on Monday 9 March in which it said the accused, Rennert van Rensburg, was sentenced by the court for failure to submit the required income tax returns for the tax years 2018 to 2023 to the South African Revenue Service (SARS).
Lt Col Siyabulela Vukubi, Hawks spokesperson, said the accused pleaded guilty.
In total Van Rensburg faced six counts relating to failure to submit an income-tax return.
On counts one to three the accused was sentenced to R6 000 or 12 months’ imprisonment on each count, of which R2 000 or four months’ imprisonment was suspended on each count. On counts four to six the accused was also sentenced to R6 000 or 12 months’ imprisonment on each count, of which R2 000 or four months’ imprisonment was also suspended on each count.
Vukubi said the accused was effectively sentenced to a fine of R24 000, or four years’ direct imprisonment.
