CAPE TOWN – Karl Bremer Hospital in Parow North officially unveiled its commemorative 70th anniversary banner on Friday 27 February, marking the start of year-long celebrations honouring seven decades of service to the northern Tygerberg community and broader Western Cape.
The milestone launch kicks off a programme of activities celebrating the hospital’s journey while reaffirming its commitment to sustainability, continuous improvement and expanding access to quality health care, the provincial Department of Health and Wellness said in a statement.
The hospital plays a significant role in strengthening health-care delivery through close collaboration with surrounding primary health-care facilities and a strengthened referral pathway with Tygerberg Hospital. This integrated system ensures patients receive coordinated, appropriate levels of care, from local primary services to specialised tertiary care when necessary.

Stroke-care excellence
Karl Bremer Hospital has received significant recognition for its commitment to multidisciplinary stroke care. The facility became the first public-sector hospital in the Western Cape to achieve Gold Status in 2023 and the second public-sector hospital in South Africa to receive Diamond Status, the highest distinction in the Stroke Awards programme.
“Seventy years is more than a milestone,” said Jonathan Lucas, chief executive,”it is a testament to the resilience of our staff, the trust of our community and our unwavering commitment to providing quality health care.
“While we acknowledge that challenges have shaped parts of our journey we remain firmly focused on strengthening our services, enhancing patient care and building a sustainable hospital for future generations.”

Year-long celebrations planned
The anniversary year will feature public and stakeholder events, culminating in key celebrations in June and December. These activities will highlight the hospital’s legacy, showcase clinical innovation and share stories of staff dedication and patient impact.
Hospital board member Shahnaz Adams, who has served for six years, praised the consistent efforts to deliver high-standard health care.
“Management and staff work together to continually improve services while addressing the needs and concerns of patients and their families,” Adams said. “They remain responsive to challenges and the changing health-care demands within the community they serve.”
As Karl Bremer Hospital celebrates this milestone it does so with a forward-looking vision committed to strengthening services, restoring public confidence and continuing to serve the Western Cape with compassion, resilience and excellence.
