While there is still no clarity on what caused a fire there Cape Town International Airport confirmed power had been fully restored in its Northern Service Yard (International inner lane, landside).

The fire was reported at approximately 11:15 on Tuesday (24 February) and extinguished shortly afterwards. As a precaution sections of the international terminal affected by smoke were evacuated.

“We can confirm all passengers and staff were evacuated safely and calmly,” spokesperson airport Ofentse Dijoe said.

“Technical teams were stabilising network and IT systems, but services are progressively returning to normal.”

The current status is as follows:

  • International Departures: Operations have resumed. However, due to the earlier suspension, passengers should expect delays and schedule adjustments.
  • International Arrivals: Some flights were diverted during the incident. Passengers are urged to confirm arrival statuses directly with their airlines.
  • Domestic Flights: Both arrivals and departures experienced minor disruptions due to system outages. Delays may persist as operations stabilise.
  • Important advice for passengers is to avoid unnecessary congestion at the terminal, all passengers are strongly encouraged to:
  • Check the ACSA App for real-time updates.
  • Contact your airline directly to confirm flight status before travelling to the airport.

Updates

“We would like to thank our passengers, airline partners, and stakeholders for their patience,” said Dijoe.

“We extend our sincere thanks to the emergency response teams for their swift and professional action. Further updates will be issued as the airport returns to a full operational schedule.”

TygerBurger is still waiting on reasons on how the fire started and will ad that information as soon as it is received.
