The long arm of justice is catching up with two young men who drove around in Goedemoed and The Crest in Durbanville this past Saturday evening — throwing at least eight firecrackers through their car window at a dog walker and at dogs in their yards.

In one incident a firecracker was thrown at a frail 68-year-old woman, who was walking her two Yorkshire terriers of 16 and 12 years old on their leashes. According to her husband, who wants to remain anonymous, she and the dogs were severely traumatised after the incident.

Threw firecracker at wife

He said that according to his wife the two young men forced her off the road into a bush on the pavement with their vehicle where she was walking in Friesland Street in Goedemoed. The one young man in the front passenger’s seat then threw a firecracker at her feet — right between her two Yorkies. The explosion was so severe that the firecracker left a mark on the road, he said. The dogs went completely hysterical, his wife said.

“As if that was not enough, they drove around the block and harassed her a second time. They drove slowly alongside her — shouting obscenities and showed abusive and obscene hand signs at her. They were approaching her for a third time after that in Angus Street, but it was just before our house and they drove off,” he said.

“This is not civilized behaviour and I am very upset that my wife was terrorised like that. I want them to be brought to justice and humiliated. They should get commumity service — picking up dog poo for hours in the sun,” he said.

In another incident in Joostenberg Street in The Crest a resident was home with his family at about 19:40 when they heard tyres screeching as a car was stopping in front of their house and a loud explosion after that. Their 13-year-old pitbull dog went ballistic and barked for almost 10 minutes after the incident, he said.

More incidents occurred at 20:51 and 21:07 on Langeberg Road in Tara . which also affected residents and animals in Klein Nederburg.

The suspect vehicle, a white Toyota SUV, has been traced to its owner in the Villagio complex in Tara. Video footage also clearly shows the faces of the suspects.

“Complaints have been lodged by the victims with the City of Cape Town’s law enforcement department,” he said. “Our neighbourhood watch have over 200 CCTV cameras in our neighbourhoods, so not much crime gets past our camera network,” he said.
