Local war councillor Angus McKenzie says street names will not be replaced, but names will be written on kerbs.

This is the promise of local ward councillor Angus McKenzie.

McKenzie said he discovered street signs were living “very exciting second lives” as décor in people’s homes.

“For years we’ve been replacing stolen street signs only for them to disappear mysteriously again. Apparently, some people really love collecting souvenirs. So we’ve decided to adapt. We are now painting street names directly onto curbs. The road itself is now the sign. Unless someone plans on removing the entire pavement and installing it in their lounge we should be alright!”

Serious note

On a serious note McKenzie said street names, for instance, assist emergency services find homes more quickly.

“This will make navigation easier and save the costs of repeated vandalism. We’re protecting ratepayers’ resources when we safeguard Bonteheuwel’s amenities and commit to improving the area, even outsmarting the thieves to do so.”

Annually, the City of Cape Town spends millions to replace stolen infrustructure which, according to McKenzie, diverts resources away from the important work that needs doing in the area.

“Most people in Bonteheuwel are keen on building the area up, but you do get those, a minority, hell-bent on keeping it at certain levels. We will not go backwards!”
