A dedicated local learner was crowned as one of the Top 40 learners in the Western Cape National Senior Certificate Examinations, earning her a place at the prestigious provincial awards ceremony.

Faatimah Dollie from Strandfontein, was honoured at the Western Cape’s annual National Senior Certificate Awards Ceremony, held at the Premier’s official residence in Leeuwenhof on Thursday 29 January.
These awards highlight the province’s top-performing matriculants and were celebrated for their outstanding academic achievements.
“Finding out that I had been selected as one of the Top 40 learners was an incredibly proud and rewarding moment for me. It felt like a true reflection of years of dedication and consistent effort,” said Dollie.
Her grandmother’s belief
She says sharing the news with her grandmother, who had always believed in her potential, felt like a dream come true.
“My grandmother often reminded me that I would one day stand on a stage in acknowledgement of my academic performance. Being able to prove that belief true meant everything to me,” she explained.

While Dollie consistently maintained strong academic results throughout her school career, her journey wasn’t without challenges. Mathematics and Accounting proved particularly demanding, requiring continuous practice.
“There were periods when the academic workload became overwhelming. These challenges tested my discipline but also played a significant role in shaping my academic growth,” she added.
Structured studies
The key to her success lay in adopting a disciplined study approach.
“I created a clear and realistic study timetable and made it a priority to study every day, dividing my time into focused study periods rather than studying for long and exhausting hours,” Dollie shared.
This structured method allowed her to stay organised, productive, and mentally balanced throughout the demanding matric year.
Strong support system
Dollie credits her success to the unwavering support of her family and teachers.
“My parents were my greatest source of motivation, consistently encouraging me to work hard while maintaining a healthy balance between academics and personal well-being. There were occasions where giving up felt easier, but I chose to remind myself of my goals and the reasons behind my hard work,” she said.
Her teachers’ belief in her abilities and work ethic provided additional motivation to continuously strive for excellence, even during overwhelming periods when giving up seemed easier.

Dollie’s class and English teacher, Lameez Fortune, at Grassy Park High, is exceptionally proud of her academic achievements.
“I taught her since Grade 8 and I just knew there was something magical about her. Her work ethic is second to none and her focus is on herself. Everything else is just background noise,” she said.
Message of hope
To fellow learners facing their own academic challenges, Dollie offers words of encouragement:
“Consistency is essential. Believe in yourself and understand that your circumstances do not define your potential. With dedication, effort, and balance, improvement is always possible. Never underestimate what you are capable of achieving.”
