Lentegeur police have warned that people caught opening fake robbery cases will find themselves facing criminal charges.
Lentegeur Police Station spokesperson Const Navon van Houten said it has been found that people are lodging fake charges at the station for varying reasons, including to commit insurance fraud.
He made an example of a recent case involving a 15-year-old girl. The girl visited the station on 15 January and reported a robbery, but the investigating officer noticed discrepancies in her statement. After further questioning it was discovered that she had opened the fake robbery case to fraudulently claim from insurance.

Criminal record
She was charged for perjury but not arrested, because she is a minor. She was instead released into the care of her mother and now has a criminal record.
Van Houten warned that people who opened fraudulent cases not only risk facing charges themselves but could also skew the area’s crime statistics which interferes with legitimate police work. Furthermore, the person would then get a criminal record, which puts a blight on future job applications.
“These cases are very serious and contribute to the stats of the station,” Van Houten said. “And therefore Lentegeur police condemn such cases. The investigating officer will investigate and may charge you with perjury for lying under oath.”
