Bishop Lavis opted to bat first in a much-anticipated match against Guguletu and was soon in trouble when they lost their first wicket with the score on seven when Natheer Rodgers (4) was trapped leg before wicket by Luvuyo Gguma.
With Neo Petersen who came in at number three and not his usual opening position, the Lavis ship steadied a bit. Petersen and Bevan Abrahams managed to put together a partnership of 31 runs. Abrahams (23) lost his wicket with the score on 38 and with wickets falling at regular interval Neo Petersen anchored the innings and eventually was caught at mid-wicket off the bowling of Feza Fihla with his score on 22. Lavis ended their inning on 125/10 and with a highly talented batting line-up, things did not look good for the hosts.
For Gugs, Gguma performed best with the ball and finished with figures of 3/29 in his allotted 10 overs. Strong and stern words must have been shared in the Lavis changeroom during the innings break as the boys from Lavis came out firing with the ball. The visitors lost five wickets before the lunch break with the score on only 52 runs. After the lunch break things went from bad to worse and they found themselves with their backs against the wall with the score on 77/7 when the experienced Mbulelo Nkomo was stumped by Abrahams off the bowling of Jerwaan Goosen.
No resistance
Gugs showed little to no resistance and collapsed to 84 all out ensuring a 41-run bonus point win for the hosts. For Lavis, Marcelino St Jerry was the pick of the bowling attack with 4/34. “Next Saturday, Lavis will travel down the Old Stellenbosch Arterial road to Belhar where another much-anticipated tuff clash awaits us. Our second team also enjoyed good success on the field when they beat Bonteheuwel by five wickets in a high scoring affair. Bonteheuwel batted first and scored 201/9 with Kamva Sheleni (77) and Steven Petersen (44) the standout batsmen. For Lavis, Christo Hitzeroth was the best with the ball with 3/30. The boys from Lavis were impressive with the bat and scored the winning runs in the 30th over. For the visitors Byron Brown (30), Hitzeroth (30) and Triston van Rooyen (44) were the pick of the batsmen.”
