Outdoor enthusiasts and avid hikers are encouraged to take part in this year’s “Take a Hike Day 2025” this Saturday 15 November.
Not only will hikers be able to enjoy a hike, the beautiful scenery and lovely summer weather, but at the same time also do their bit for the environment by helping to clean up Table Mountain as they go along.
The event starts at 06:00.
The annual event is a joint initiative between the Table Mountain Aerial Cableway Company in partnership with SANParks.
Now in its fifth year, it has grown into a signature event, attracting hundreds of nature enthusiasts, families, and community volunteers. Last year more than 300 hikers have participated, collecting nearly 60 kg of litter from Table Mountain’s trails.
“Take a Hike Day is about more than just a climb, it is a celebration of community, conservation, and care. Each year we are reminded of how powerful it is when people come together to protect the spaces that make Cape Town special,” says Wahida Parker, managing director at the Table Mountain Aerial Cableway Company.
Participants will be able to choose between three routes – Platteklip Gorge, the contour path and Kloof Corner.
“As custodians of this unique and biodiverse landscape, we are always encouraged to see the public taking an active role in caring for the park,” says Megan Taplin, park manager: Table Mountain National Park.
Hikers will also receive a free cable car ride down, along with snack packs and refreshments at the summit, courtesy of Table Mountain Aerial Cableway Company, the organisers say.
Participants are urged to come prepared and keep the following in mind:
- Apply sunscreen and wear a hat or cap;
- Bring enough water;
- Wear comfortable, weather-appropriate clothing and sturdy hiking shoes;
- Pack a light windbreaker or rain jacket;
- Stick to the route and demarcated pathways;
- Every hiking group should have a leader;
- Watch the weather and time, and turn back if conditions worsen, and
- Save the emergency number 021 937 0300 on your phone.
Participants can park at the Lower Tafelberg Road parking area and take the free Cableway shuttle to the Lower Cableway Station, and make their way to the hiking route that they have chosen for check-in.
