CAPE TOWN – Two men who attempted to bribe a police officer to alter his testimony in a drug-related case have been convicted of corruption in the Bellville Regional Court.
The court sentenced Livinus Okechukwu Ndukuba (44) and Cletus Obiwuru (53) for corruption, after both entered into a plea and sentence agreement with the State.
They were each sentenced to a fine of R15 000 or three years’ imprisonment, and both accused were declared unfit to possess a firearm.

“According to reports, Obiwuru was on trial in a matter involving drug dealing. Ndukuba, who was an interpreter in that trial, approached a member of the South African Police Service — the arresting officer — and arranged a meeting between Obiwuru and the officer,” said Lt. Col. Siyabulela Vukubi spokesperson for the Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation (Hawks).
“The matter was reported to the Hawks for investigation, and it was revealed that Obiwuru had offered the investigating officer an amount of R15 000 to alter his testimony. An operation was subsequently conducted, during which both accused were arrested,” the spokesperson added.
