Spectacle World Goodwood, in collaboration with Kfm 94.5’s Tracey Lange Cares (TLC) Party, has successfully collected more than 1 000 knitwear items, including beanies, scarves and blankets, as well as non-perishable foods for the Cape Town-based non-profit Ikamva Labantu to celebrate Mandela Day.
Its name meaning “Future of the People” in isiXhosa, the organisation aims to create sustainable socio-economic change by empowering people from poor communities through education, training and various support programmes. Its objectives also take in early-childhood development, supporting the well-being of the elderly and providing after-school programmes to keep children safe.

Ikamva Labantu’s work has a special appeal for many individuals and companies seeking to make a difference in society, the motivation for the knitwear and perishable-foods drive. Adele Camerena, business associate at Spectacle World, expressed her gratitude: “I’m immensely thankful to my team, the La-Di-Da Knitting Ladies, Clara Anna Fontein’s Oasis Lifestyle Centre and our friends and clients for their commitment to this project. The volume and quality of the items we received are truly overwhelming. Together we can spread warmth and kindness to all the gogos and children served by Ikamva Labantu.”
She pointed out that the non-profit organisation needed more support than ever before so its inspiring work can continue. “Ikamva Labantu forms a vital part of our community, and by supporting it we contribute to its invaluable work.”
Knitted and household items
The knitted and household items will provide comfort and warmth to those in need, representing the spirit of compassion that embodies the organisation. According to Camarena a big shout-out must go to Valerie Munro, successful businesswoman from Flamingo Vlei. She assisted with non-perishable food, knitted goods and brought Benedet Heeks of La-Di-Da Knitting into the fold.
La-Di-Da Knitting Ladies, a group that began with only two women and has grown into a vibrant community of around 25, were instrumental in the success of the campaign. “Each item is made with love and care, and will help bring comfort and dignity to the elders and kids we support,” she added. “We are also deeply grateful to Oasis for its donation of knitted items and non-perishable food items.”
Harsh winter
Marié Porter of Clara Anna Fontein’s Oasis Lifestyle Centre said it was an honour to be part of the project. “This is our second year and we’re delighted to contribute to the community and help keep the little ones warm during this harsh winter. We’re already looking forward to next year.”
Camarena concluded: “Every Mandela Day we’re reminded that when people come together with kindness and purpose incredible things happen. It’s more than a celebration of Nelson Mandela’s life and legacy; it’s about making the world a better place.”
