Table View police are investigating cases of reckless and negligent driving and robbery following an incident at Bloubergstrand Beach yesterday afternoon (Thursday 9 April).

According to provincial police spokesperson Sgt Wesley Twigg, suspects allegedly involved in a robbery were travelling in a silver-grey Hyundai when they were chased by private security. A shootout reportedly occurred during the pursuit, which ended at the corner of Koeberg and Racecourse roads in Milnerton, where the suspects were apprehended.

Police confirmed that three adult men were arrested in connection with the incident and are expected to appear in the Cape Town Magistrate’s Court once formally charged. The circumstances surrounding the shootout remain under investigation.

Eyewitness describes chaotic scene

A parent travelling with a child described the frightening moment shots were fired during the chase. “We just turned down from the school because we were looking at the assessments, then we went to Paddocks and the police vans and security vans were chasing that silver car and shots were fired. Me and my son just heard it—it’s a unique sound, like when the bullet travels.

“I told my son those were bullets. I checked if he was bleeding anywhere, I checked myself, and only afterwards I realised what had happened.”

The witness added that the incident appeared to stem from a robbery near Paddocks.

“At the parking hotel, one of the ladies said a guy, robbed somebody near Paddocks, and that’s when the cops came chasing with security companies. Me and my son were both very scared. It happened right in front of us, right next to us in the lane next to us.”

Investigation continues

Police say investigations into reckless and negligent driving, robbery, and the circumstances of the shootout are ongoing.
