CAPE TOWN – A peaceful protest by members of the Steenberg and Retreat taxi associations caused temporary road closures in Prince George Drive on Monday 13 April, as operators raised concerns about crime and safety within the industry.

The police confirmed that the demonstration remained orderly, with participants handing over memoranda of demand to three local police stations.

Key issues

Among the key issues highlighted were allegations of extortion affecting taxi operators and calls for increased police visibility at taxi ranks to protect both drivers and commuters. This is according to Jay-jay Maans, a member of the Steenberg and Retreat taxi association.

Police spokesperson Constable Ndakhe Gwala said the matter is being reviewed and that “police management will engage with the parties concerned regarding their issues.”

Police confirmed that the memorandums have been received and that the concerns raised are also being assessed.

Road closures

Traffic disruptions were reported during the morning as protest action impacted several major routes. According to the City’s Traffic Services spokesperson, Kevin Jacobs, road closures were implemented along key intersections on Prince George Drive, including at Military Road, Retreat Road, Hek Road, 6th Avenue and 8th Avenue.

The closures, which were put in place to ensure public safety and manage traffic flow during the protest, resulted in delays for motorists travelling through the area during peak hours. However, the situation was brought under control, and all affected roads were reopened shortly after 09:00.

People’s Post reached out to the Muizenberg Community Police Forum but they could not respond before the time of publication.
