The Fish Hoek Valley Family History Club will host its next monthly meeting on Tuesday, 21 April, inviting residents interested in tracing their roots to attend at the Fish Hoek Library Hall at 18:00.
The club, a initiative established in partnership with the Fish Hoek Valley Museum, aims to create a welcoming space for anyone curious about genealogy, whether they are beginners or experienced researchers.
Meetings are held on the third Tuesday of every month and are open to the public at no cost.
This month’s meeting will feature a special guest speaker, Anne Johnson, from the North of Ireland Family History Society.
She will present an introductory talk on how DNA testing can be used as a powerful tool in family history research.
Johnson will explore how DNA evidence can complement traditional research methods such as census records and parish registers.
While historical documents help trace names, dates and locations, DNA testing can confirm biological relationships, reveal previously unknown ancestors and help overcome obstacles where written records are incomplete or missing.
Ireland, in particular, has become a leader in this field due to the loss of significant historical records, including many 19th-century wills and census documents destroyed during the Public Record Office fire.
As a result, researchers have increasingly turned to genetic tools to reconstruct family histories and reconnect family lines.
Johnson will also introduce those in attendance to WikiTree, an online platform that allows users to build and document their family trees collaboratively.
The platform emphasises the use of reliable sources and offers access to a global community of genealogists who can provide guidance, corrections and new insights.
According to Johnson, combining DNA results with historical records enables researchers to build a more accurate and complete picture of their ancestry.
It can also connect individuals with living relatives who may hold valuable information, photographs or family stories.
The organisers encourage anyone interested in family history to attend and learn more about the tools and techniques available.
