CAPE TOWN – Private security officers arrested a suspect and seized cocaine with an estimated street value of R12 000 during a drug bust in Bellville on Tuesday 7 April.
SJC Tactical Officers T4 and T5 responded to an alert at approximately 12:24, after their system had flagged a silver Volkswagen Polo for suspected drug-related activity.
The officers located the vehicle at the Frans Conradie and Paradys Street traffic lights before following it to the Engen Garage in Old Oak, where they secured the scene.
Drugs found hidden in vehicle
Working alongside Bellville police, they conducted a thorough search of the vehicle and discovered a sock hidden behind the steering wheel.
The sock contained 16 packets of cocaine, weighing approximately twelve grams, with an estimated street value of R12 000.
The suspect, along with the vehicle, drugs and cash found in his possession, was handed over to the police for arrest, legal processing and further investigation.

Constable Ndakhe Gwala, Western Province police spokesperson, confirmed the incident. “This office confirmed an adult male was arrested for possession of drugs.”
The adult male appeared in the Bellville Magistrate’s Court on Wednesday.
House robber sentenced to 10 years
In a separate case, Detective Sergeant Onverwaght of Bellville Police Station secured a conviction against Mark Brown for two house-robbery charges.
Brown was sentenced to 10 years’ imprisonment on each charge in the Bellville Regional Court. The sentences will run concurrently.

Onverwaght had responded to the house-robbery incident, reported on 9 January 2025, collecting evidence and interviewing victims at the crime scene. The suspect was found in someone’s yard near the crime scene and was subsequently linked to both house robberies by Onverwaght’s investigation.
