A learner at Edgemead High School in Cape Town has been invited to go on an academic tour to the United States of America (USA) next year, which will see him visit several leading universities. To get him there though, Liam Solomons’ family are currently working hard at raising funds and even started a Back-A-Buddy campaign, to aid them.
Last year, TygerBurger reported on Liam, an avid footballer, after he travelled to Texas, USA, where he competed in the 2025 Dallas Cup. Liam represented Table View Football Club in the u-15 division during the tournament.
Tour
Now his father, William Solomons, says they are preparing once again to pack his bags for the US, this time though to take part in the 12th Annual STADIO Academic Achievers Tour to the USA in 2027. The tour includes visits and lectures at Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), Harvard, Yale, Princeton and Columbia University, his father says.
“Liam is currently a Grade 10 learner at Edgemead High School and is the top achiever in his grade in Mathematics, Physical Sciences and Engineering Graphics and Design, hence the invitation to take part in this academic tour.
“This is an incredible academic opportunity for him, but as a family we are seeking sponsorship to help make the tour possible. We are hoping to find individuals or businesses who would be willing to invest in Liam and support his academic journey,” his proud father says.
The Academic Achievers Tour takes place during the September and October 2027 school holidays. The programme is operated by Travel and Sport, an established academic and school tour operator.
“This opportunity is about more than simply travelling to the United States. For Liam, it is a chance to learn, experience and grow beyond the classroom by being exposed to some of the world’s leading universities, academic environments and cultural landmarks,” the parents wrote in a sponsorship proposal.
Fees
The cost of his participation in the tour is R91 890.
“As a family, we are committed to contributing what we can, but we are not in a position to cover the full cost ourselves. We are therefore reaching out to businesses, organisations and individuals who may be willing to assist through a full or partial sponsorship.
“We understand that every sponsor has different capabilities, which is why we welcome contributions of any size. Whether you are able to make a small contribution or support a significant portion of the tour cost, every contribution will make a difference,” the family wrote.
