Lavender Hill residents have endured weeks of repeated power outages following a sustained wave of vandalism and theft targeting electrical infrastructure in the area.

Ward 68 councillor Marita Petersen said multiple substations and kiosks had been continuously vandalised over three weeks, leaving residents without electricity for extended periods.

“Residents of Lavender Hill have suffered severely over these last three weeks,” she said, and the vandalisation of multiple substations “not only costs the City but ratepayers as well.”

The Seawinds area currently has no power supply.

“We will fix it within the quickest time allowed because it is area-wide or a large pocket,” she added.

Damaged infrastructure

The City also issued an unplanned maintenance alert on Sunday 26 July for blown fuses in Hilary Drive and surrounding areas, with electricity supply affected and restoration work underway under request.

“Our infrastructure is being damaged and vandalised, leaving residents without power, and very few report the perpetrators,” Petersen said, “which is unacceptable.”

She urged residents to report vandalism and theft of infrastructure to 021 480 7700.
