The values and spirit of Scouting were celebrated during a Parkrun where a sea of purple T-shirts and green scarves streamed into Zandvlei on Saturday 1 August.

More than 50 members and parents of 1st Muizenberg Scout Group gathered for the event and joined Scouts across South Africa in celebrating World Scout Scarf Day.

Community unity

Traditionally observed on 1 August each year, World Scout Scarf Day sees Scouts around the world wear their scarves to school, work and in their communities as a visible reminder of the values and spirit of Scouting.

“With this year’s celebration falling on a Saturday, SCOUTS South Africa launched a new national initiative to “Paint the Parkrun Purple”, encouraging Scout Groups to wear their purple branded t-shirts, along with their Group scarves to local Parkruns instead.

The initiative draws inspiration from the Western Cape’s popular Paint the Lion Purple campaign, where Scouts hike Lion’s Head during October in celebration of Scouting,” said Scout Group Leader Angela Lee-Wright.

Promoting healthy lifestyles

Members of 1st Muizenberg, including Meerkats, Cubs, Scouts, Rovers and Adult Leaders, embraced the challenge at Zandvlei parkrun on a crisp winter morning.

As the sun rose over the vlei, golden light reflected across the water, providing a spectacular backdrop to the event.

Former Scout parent Verity Bester, who is part of the Zandvlei parkrun organising team, welcomed the group and spoke to members and their families about the role parkrun plays in promoting healthy lifestyles, building friendships and strengthening local communities.

Several Cubs produced outstanding performances, finishing well ahead of much of the field, while the group’s youngest members, the Meerkats, captured the attention of fellow participants and volunteers alike.

Their enthusiasm, determination and cheerful encouragement of one another drew praise throughout the morning, with many commenting on how wonderful it was to see children of such a young age embracing the event, Lee-Wright added.

Memorable appearance

Pack Scouter Jason Suter arrived dressed in a full chicken rider costume, delighting children and adults alike.

The costume quickly became one of the highlights of the morning, with youngsters eagerly chasing the “chicken man” around the finish area.

Several days later, Suter is still being recognised around the South Peninsula thanks to his memorable appearance.

For 1st Muizenberg, the event was a fitting celebration of World Scout Scarf Day that highlighted the value of partnerships between community organisations.

By bringing together Scouting and parkrun, the morning encouraged young people and families to enjoy the outdoors, embrace healthy living and strengthen the sense of community that makes neighbourhoods safer, friendlier and more connected, Lee-Wright added.
