Pinelands Town Hall restored and reopened for the community

The Recreation and Parks Department officially reopened the Pinelands Town Hall this week, breathing new life into a building that has stood for more than a century. City officials and community stakeholders gathered for the ceremony. Ward 53 Councillor Riad Davids drove the project as one of several community initiatives in the area.

A century of history preserved

Construction began in 1923, and the hall opened officially in 1924. Over the decades, it witnessed every major milestone in the development of the “garden village.” It also captured pivotal moments in South African history, including the country’s first free and fair elections in 1994. Demolition bids threatened the building in 1939, 1942, 1953, 1960, and 1983, but none succeeded.

“Thank God they did not succeed,” Davids said.

A vision beyond bricks and mortar

For Davids, the project carries deeper meaning.

“The aim was to maintain the historic look and feel of this building, a legacy that deserves protection while modernising it to serve a functional purpose. This is a space where the local community and surrounding communities can meet, engage, and celebrate together. My broader vision is simple: get people out of their homes and interacting with one another.”

Mayco Member for Community Services and Health Francine Higham also attended the reopening ceremony.

Davids acknowledged the City’s wider investment in the area. “We thank the City for refurbishing not only this hall, but also the halls in Maitland Garden Village and the two halls in Thornton. These are investments that matter to real people.”

Garden of remembrance receives a facelift

After the ceremony, officials visited the Garden of Remembrance in Central Square. CID Director Marilynn McNamara and CID Manager Yazied Davids oversaw the Pinelands City Improvement District’s (CID) environmental upgrade project on display there. The upgrade includes resurfaced pathways, irrigation groundwork, brick edging, and fresh landscaping.

Safety improves alongside green spaces

The CID’s work delivers results beyond beautification. Over the past year, vehicle theft dropped by 57% and housebreaking by 31%.
