No arrests after deadly shooting at Maitland taxi rank

Cape Town police said no arrests have been made following a fatal shooting at the Maitland taxi rank in Station Road on Thursday 22 October, with the motive believed to be taxi-related violence.

Two men were shot dead, while another was wounded and rushed to hospital.

Thembakazi Mpendukana, provincial police spokesperson, said two counts of murder and one count of attempted murder had been opened.

“No arrest has been made yet and investigation continues,” she said.

The Maitland Ratepayers and Residents Association (MRRA) has urged residents to remain alert and vigilant following the shooting.

Graham Daniels, the association’s safety and security portfolio officer, said the incident raised serious concerns about public safety, particularly for residents, commuters, taxi operators, workers and local businesses that use the area daily.

Daniels expressed his condolences to the families of the deceased and wished the injured person a speedy recovery.

The association urged resdients to:

  • Be aware of their surroundings, particularly in busy public areas and around transport facilities.
  • Avoid confrontations and move away from potentially dangerous situations.
  • Report suspicious activity and any information that could assist law enforcement.
  • Refrain from spreading unverified information, names or allegations on social media.
  • Cooperate with law enforcement and community safety structures to help prevent further violence.

Daniels called on the relevant law enforcement authorities to investigate the incident thoroughly and “take the necessary steps to address violent crime in the community”.

“Our community deserves to live, work and travel without fear. Violence must not become normalised, and every effort must be made to protect innocent lives. We encourage residents to remain calm, vigilant and united during this difficult time,” he said.

Anyone with information about the shooting is urged to contact Crime Stop on 08600 10111 or report it directly to the police.
