An effective collaboration between the South African Police Service (SAPS), Community Policing Forum (CPF), Pinelands Community Improvement District (CID), Community in Blue, the Street People Unit (SPU), and law enforcement marked a positive step forward for the Pinelands community.

On Thursday, 7 August, from 16:30 to 19:30, the joint operation focused on patrolling hotspots. These hotspots are areas where informal structures have been established by displaced individuals.

The operation targeted key areas including Avontuur in Ndabeni, Elsieskraal Bridge, Thornton Sports Fields, Thornton Denneboom Circle, Thornton train station, and Poplar and Cypress avenues in Thornton.

Immediate support and shelter provided

During the operation, one individual was identified and provided with immediate support. This support included placement in a shelter, a tangible example of the initiativeโ€™s impact.

Lt Col Darleen Koopman, commander at Pinelands Police Station, expressed satisfaction with the teamwork. She called this effort the first of many planned collaborative efforts.

โ€œThis operation shows the power of working together across agencies to address the challenges faced by displaced persons in our precinct,โ€ he said.

Unified efforts to support vulnerable populations

SPU manager Bongiwe Asanda Xapa praised the professionalism and cooperation of all parties during the operation. She highlighted how unified efforts are crucial to effectively support vulnerable populations.

Dr Marietta Hopley, chair of the Pinelands Precinct CPF, echoed this sentiment.

โ€œOperations like these are essential in not only addressing the challenges of informal settlements but also in ensuring that displaced people receive access to shelter and rehabilitation services,โ€ Hopley said.

A shared commitment to safety and well-being

This operation underlines a strong, shared commitment to support the communities of Pinelands, Thornton, Ndabeni, and Epping 1.

It sets a positive precedent for future collaborations aimed at improving safety, health, and well-being in the area.

As more such initiatives are planned, residents can expect ongoing cooperation. This cooperation will be among law enforcement and community organisations with a focus on vulnerable groups.
