A 35-year-old cyclist, Danilo Waene, died on Main Road in Claremont on Friday morning, 1 August, after a minibus taxi struck him near Arden Gardens.
Danilo was a well-loved member of the Olympic Cycles Kenilworth store. According to the store’s statement, he was on his way to work when the tragedy happened.
“It is with deep sadness and heavy hearts that we share the tragic news of the passing of our dear friend and colleague, Danilo,” the statement read.
“Danilo was more than just a teammate, he was family. His warmth, humour, and kindness touched everyone he met. His absence leaves an unfillable space in our hearts and in our store.”
Accident details and emergency response
Police said the crash happened shortly after 09:00. Preliminary reports indicate Danilo swerved to avoid a car door that suddenly opened.
He fell off his bicycle and landed in the path of an oncoming minibus taxi, which could not stop in time.
Emergency services and traffic police responded quickly, but paramedics declared Danilo dead at the scene.
Authorities temporarily closed the southbound lane toward Wynberg to investigate the accident.
“The cyclist was knocked down by a taxi. It’s tragic, but at least the taxi driver stayed at the scene,” said a motorist who passed by shortly after.
Police open culpable homicide case
Western Cape police spokesperson WO Joseph Swartbooi confirmed Claremont police opened a culpable homicide case.
“Claremont police registered a culpable homicide case following an accident on Friday morning at about 09:00 in Main Road, Claremont,” Swartbooi said.
“According to reports, the cyclist swerved to avoid a vehicle door that opened unexpectedly. He fell off his bicycle and landed in front of an oncoming taxi, which couldn’t stop in time. The cyclist, aged 35, succumbed to his injuries on the scene.”
The minibus taxi driver remained at the scene and is cooperating with the investigation. No arrests have been made.
Community mourns danilo’s loss
Though police have not officially released the victim’s name, Danilo’s death has sent shockwaves through the cycling and retail communities.
“We will miss him dearly and honour his memory every day. Rest in peace, Danilo. You will never be forgotten,” Olympic Cycles said.
Ward 59 councillor Mikhail Manuel expressed his condolences and issued a safety reminder:
“I am saddened by the passing of Danilo Waene in a cyclist-motor vehicle accident in Claremont. I reiterate the call for motorists to be mindful when opening car doors. A similar incident in Sea Point last June resulted in Calib de Kock losing his life.”
“The roadway is a shared space. We must all be mindful to ensure safety for all Capetonians.”
