A fire broke out in Imizamo Yethu, Hout Bay, this morning (Wednesday 29 July).
The fire started near Madiba Square at approximately 06:40, says Ward 74 councillor Rob Quintas.
According to City fire and rescue service spokesperson Jermaine Carelse, the City’s fire and rescue service received the call shortly thereafter. Six fire engines and four water tankers arrived on the scene. Crews used four water streams to fight the fire, which affected informal dwellings.
At first, not knowing how many structures the fire had damaged, Carelse says crews split the area into two sections to contain the fire more quickly.
The fire was contained at about 10:25. Carelse says the fire destroyed an estimated 50 to 60 structures, however no injuries or fatalities were reported.
Meanwhile, Quintas asked residents to steer clear of the fire area and asked motorists to avoid the Main Road area near Imizamo Yethu to make way for fire vehicles to get through.
To support those affected, residents can drop off donations for affected households and firefighters at the Community Crime Prevention Offices at 9 Princess Street, Hout Bay. First responders and local fire relief NGO Thula Thula will handle distribution.
