Four Paws South Africa, in partnership with Mdzananda Animal Clinic, has recently delivered 67 Kennels of Hope, care packages and more than 670 food parcels to dogs and their families in Khayelitsha.

The initiative formed part of Four Paws’ Mandela Day campaign and was inspired by Nelson Mandela’s legacy of service and compassion.

The campaign aimed to provide shelter and nutritional support to animals living in under-resourced communities.

Food parcels

Although the original target was to deliver 67 kennels and food parcels, the campaign exceeded expectations.

More than 670 food parcels were distributed, extending the initiative’s reach and ensuring that additional dogs and their caregivers received support.

The kennels offer essential protection from harsh weather conditions, giving dogs a safer and more dignified place to sleep.

The care packages and food parcels also help address ongoing challenges relating to animal welfare and access to nutritious food.

Campaign

Pupils from Micklefield Primary School played an important role in the campaign by packing 67 care packages and more than 670 food parcels.

They were joined by Four Paws ambassador Carishma Basday and staff from the organisation.

The campaign brought together learners, animal welfare organisations, businesses and community members in a shared effort to improve the lives of companion animals.

Four Paws thanked Hill’s Pet Food, K9 Pet Foods and Montego Dog Food for sponsoring the food parcels.

Their contributions helped provide nutritious food to hundreds of dogs and their families during a time of need.

“This campaign is a powerful reminder of what we can achieve when compassion turns into action,” said Fiona Miles, director at Four Paws South Africa.

Kennels

“Together with our supporters and partners, we have not only reached our goal but gone beyond it, delivering meaningful support for dogs who need it most. This is the spirit of Mandela Day brought to life.”

Marcelle du Plessis, fundraising and communications executive at Mdzananda Animal Clinic, said the initiative had made a tangible difference to pet owners in the community.

“We see the daily struggles faced by pet owners in our community and initiatives like this make a real, tangible difference,” she said.

“The kennels provide dignity and shelter, while the food parcels offer relief to families doing their best to care for their animals.”
