An e-hailing passenger died in Wynberg on Monday 11 May after a tree fell onto the vehicle while it was travelling along Tennant Road at about 07:20. The driver, who had collected the passenger on Main Road and was en route to Claremont, sustained minor injuries.
The City of Cape Town Fire and Rescue Service confirmed crews responded to the corner of Tennant and Oak Roads. Spokesperson Jermaine Carelse said the Wynberg Fire Station crew and Metro Rescue attended the scene.
“The patient was a passenger in the vehicle and was extricated at 10:10; unfortunately, she was declared deceased on scene,” Carelse said.

Provincial police spokesperson Captain FC van Wyk described the moments leading up to the tragedy. “While driving in Tennant Road, a tree blew over and landed on top of the vehicle. The passenger, who was seated at the back of the vehicle, succumbed due to injuries sustained and was declared dead on the scene by medical personnel. The driver sustained slight injuries,” Van Wyk said.
Wynberg police open inquest
Wynberg police have opened an inquest into the death. Police have not yet released the identity of the deceased. The circumstances surrounding the tree collapse remain under investigation
