Dog lovers and their furry four-legged friends are set to take over the Sea Point Promenade on Sunday 12 April as the eighth annual Paws on the Promenade returns in support of the Mdzananda Animal Clinic in Khayelitsha.

The popular dog walk fundraiser, held in partnership with Vondi’s Holistic Pet Nutrition, invites humans and their four-legged friends to strut their stuff for a good cause.

The 5 km walk, which will start at the Mouille Point Lighthouse at 09:00, will be along the promenade to the Sea Point Swimming Pool and back.

Shorter turnaround points will also be available for those who prefer a gentler stroll.

Marcelle du Plessis, fundraising and communications executive and event organiser, said last year’s event saw 295 dogs take part.

She said, on a budget of just R8 500, they raised R37 500, an amount she hopes would be exceeded this year.

The Mdzananda Animal Clinic and Shelter, an NPO, serves an average 22 000 animals a year through consultations, hospitalisation, general and orthopaedic surgeries, continuous sterilisations, mobile clinics, an animal ambulance and homeless pet shelter.

“Sadly, we recently received news that our main funder would not renew any grants in South Africa next year,” Du Plessis said.

“This means a loss of R250 000 a month. We need to find replacement funding and encourage everyone to join Paws on the Promenade to help with this.”

Such urgent aims, with just a touch of gravity, do not mean this is not a fun-filled event.

“People get very creative, dressing themselves and their dogs up in costumes,” Du Plessis said. “There will be dalmatians in tutus, dachshunds in hot-dog outfits and pomeranians with bow ties.”

Cindy Jacobson, manager of Vondi’s Holistic Pet Nutrition, called the event one the year’s highlights.

“The route is one of the most scenic in Cape Town making it a wonderful walk for dogs and owners alike.

“We support Mdzananda because of their excellent professionalism and the impact they make in the Khayelitsha community, educating pet owners and treating sick pets that would otherwise have little to no help.”

Tickets cost R50 per person, R50 per dog and R25 for kids under 12. These are available from Quicket www.qkt.io/pawsonprom2026 or on the day from 08:30.

Raffle prizes, products sales, delicious coffee, food and crafts will entertain you on the day. The first 100 dogs to arrive will also receive a free goodie bag.

All pet owners are encouraged to dress up in a dog outfit or to wear something orange for the Mdzananda Animal Clinic brand.

A small amount of homeless dogs will be available to “rent” for a walk on the day. Contact marcelle@mdzananda.co.za to book a dog.
