Children’s rights organisation Molo Songololo has been championing the protection of children for more than 40 years and now aims to raise R65 000 to continue its vital work in safeguarding vulnerable children and promoting their rights across communities.

The Observatory-based organisation celebrates 47 years this year.

Its director, Patric Solomons, said it constantly needs funding and, each year in honour of his birthday, he leads he leads a fundraising drive to support its work.

“I have always asked my friends and family to help raise funds for Molo Songololo. This year I am turning 65. We do a raffle followed by an office party, where we also have spot prizes and auctions to raise money.”

He said Molo Songololo aimed to exceed the R50 000 that it raised last year.

“It has been a long, beautiful and challenging 47 years promoting and protecting the rights of children. This fundraiser is an opportunity for our friends and supporters to celebrate our achievements over the years.”

According to Solomons, the event will take place at the office in Observatory on Friday 24 April.

“Raffle tickets can be purchased at R100. We also have a bumper hamper as a main prize and many smaller prizes up for grabs.”

He emphasised these funds are essential to sustain and expand the wide range of services the organisation provides.

Solomon said the organisation conducts awareness campaigns in various communities to educate children about their rights.

“We also tell them about their responsibility because with each right comes responsibility. We work with primary and high school learners. We also see how children who know and understand their rights are better able to protect the rights of others and their own.”

He added that its child-protection and victim-empowerment programme also involve working closely with parents.
