Residents across several areas of Cape Town are being urged to prepare for possible water-supply disruptions as the City’s Water and Sanitation Directorate carries out planned maintenance work, including pipe and valve installations, repairs, replacements and broader infrastructure upgrades.

While not all households will be affected, residents are advised to store enough water in clean, sealed containers as a precaution.

Oranjezicht pipeline

In Oranjezicht, planned pipeline replacement work will result in a shutdown tomorrow (14 April) from 08:00 to 20:00.

A wide range of streets will be affected, including Upper Orange Street, Belmont Avenue, Montrose Avenue, Rose Mount Avenue, Sir George Grey Street and surrounding roads. Residents are urged to prepare by storing sufficient water and closing taps during restoration.

Melkbosstrand and surrounding areas will experience a shutdown on Wednesday 15 April, from 09:00 to 22:00 while a steel tee-piece is replaced on the R27 network.

In Ottery, a pressure control device will be installed on Wednesday 15 April from 09:00 to 16:00, leading to temporary supply disruptions in the Humby area.

Residents are advised to store water in advance and ensure taps are closed during restoration.

Retreat will experience a shutdown on Thursday 16 April, from 09:00 to 19:30 to allow rehabilitation work at Coller Road and Petal Road.

Affected areas include Allenby Drive, Petal Road, Coller Road and surrounding streets. Residents should prepare for temporary interruptions and store water safely.

Steenberg supply

The Steenberg area bounded by Handel Street, Allenby Drive and Symphony Avenue will experience a shutdown on Thursday 16 April, from 09:00 to 19:30, to facilitate pipe installation and tie-in works.

Residents are urged to prepare in advance and store enough water for domestic use.

The water supply to Witsand, Atlantis (eastern side of the industrial area) will be shut off temporarily today (13 April) from 07:00 to 18:00 to allow maintenance teams to conduct planned work on the Witzand Pump Station and related reticulation infrastructure.

Residents are advised to store water in advance and water tankers will be available in the area during the disruption.

Network testing

The City will also conduct zero-pressure tests (ZPT) and step-testing across multiple areas between today and Thursday 16 April, including Ocean View, Bo-Kaap, Gardens, Vredehoek and others.

These tests may result in low pressure or temporary outages, though exact impacts cannot be predicted.

These works form part of the City’s broader Water Demand Management Strategy aimed at improving infrastructure reliability, reducing water loss and addressing unaccounted-for water. Pressure management and system testing help reduce pipe bursts and improve long-term supply stability.

Residents are reminded that all maintenance sites are construction zones and not accessible to the public.

Work may take longer than planned if complications arise. After restoration, water may appear discoloured or milky due to trapped air, but this will clear naturally.
