Seniors enjoy jazz festival outing
Residents of Douglas Murray Old Age Home enjoyed a day of music, companionship and entertainment at the annual Cape Town Big Band Jazz Festival at the Baxter Theatre on Saturday 30 May. Members of the Lions Club of Tokai joined fellow Lions and Rotarians to accompany residents from the home in CAFDA Village to the popular event.
The festival remains a highlight on the Lions District 410W calendar and gives clubs an opportunity to treat senior citizens from their communities to a special day out.
Music brings joy
Guests enjoyed performances by a school band, a community band and a Christmas band throughout the afternoon. The varied programme kept the audience entertained and encouraged social interaction among attendees. According to the Lions Club of Tokai, the performances maintained the high standard for which the festival is known.
“The residents thoroughly enjoyed the music and the opportunity to spend time with others in a welcoming environment,” the club said. Club members volunteered as chaperones and assisted residents throughout the day. They helped ensure everyone travelled comfortably and enjoyed the outing. The event also provided residents with an opportunity to reconnect with old friends and make new acquaintances while listening to live music.
The Lions Club thanked all volunteers who contributed their time and effort to make the day a success. Special recognition went to club member Lynette Davids, who arranged take-home snack packs for the residents.
The club said the thoughtful gesture added an extra touch of care and kindness to the experience. Community organisations such as Lions clubs continue to play an important role in supporting older people through social and recreational activities. Events like the Cape Town Big Band Jazz Festival help combat loneliness, encourage community participation and create lasting memories for residents.
For many attendees, the outing offered more than entertainment. It provided an opportunity to connect with others, enjoy a change of scenery and feel valued within the wider community.
