Robben Island Museum launches free heritage pass for children under 15

Families can now explore one of South Africa’s most powerful historical landmarks for less, as Robben Island Museum launches its new NextGen Heritage Free Pass.

The initiative will allow South African children under the age of 15 to visit the museum free of charge when accompanied by a paying adult from Monday 1 June to Friday 30 October 2026.

A South African adult ticket costs R400, while the free entry applies to one child per paying adult. Additional children will pay the standard child rate of R210 each.

The museum said in a press statement that the campaign is aimed at making heritage exploration more accessible to families while encouraging young South Africans to engage with the country’s history and democratic journey.

Visitors to the island can take part in immersive guided tours led by former political prisoners, offering first-hand insight into one of the country’s most significant heritage sites.

According to the museum, the initiative forms part of its broader objective to educate children and promote intergenerational engagement with South Africa’s living heritage.

It also hopes the campaign will inspire curiosity, reflection and a deeper sense of shared history among families.

The NextGen Heritage Free Pass is valid for daily tour slots at 09:00, 11:00 and 13:00.

Bookings can be made through Robben Island Museum’s official website or directly at the Nelson Mandela Gateway to Robben Island at the V&A Waterfront.

The museum has encouraged families to make use of the initiative during the winter and spring months, describing the experience as both educational and meaningful for children and adults alike.
