Heathfield High School celebrated a strong victory after defeating Steenberg High School in a debate held at Steenberg on 17 April, securing a final score of 50–35.
School principal Nadia Aanhuizen praised the learners for their dedication, highlighting the team’s growing confidence and cohesion.
A special commendation goes to Khwezi Saki, who was named Best Speaker with an outstanding score of 14 out of 16.
Close behind was Lisakhanya Silinga, who achieved an impressive 13 out of 16, contributing significantly to the team’s success.
The event also marked an important milestone for Heathfield High, as learners received their badges from the Tores Foundation and the school officially established its first debate team.
Positive experience
Learners reflected positively on the experience.
Lisakhanya Siwinga described the warm welcome from Steenberg High, noting the hospitality and sportsmanship shown throughout the day.
Both teams presented compelling arguments, making the debate engaging and competitive.
Farah Baxter added that despite cloudy weather, the atmosphere remained vibrant. She highlighted how both teams anticipated each other’s strategies, contributing to a well-contested debate.
Following the competition, learners from both schools participated in a bonding session, sharing snacks, conversations and laughter.
The journey home was a highlight, with learners travelling together, singing and enjoying each other’s company.
The day not only showcased debating talent but also fostered friendship and unity, leaving learners with lasting memories and a sense of pride in their achievements.
Principal Aanhuizen emphasised that consistent participation in debates is helping learners develop critical thinking, confidence and public speaking skills.
She expressed gratitude to Steenberg High for hosting the event and encouraging interschool collaboration, adding that such engagements strengthen community ties and inspire learners to strive for excellence in academics and beyond going forward.
