Heathfield High crowned champions at debate tournament

Heathfield High School has cemented its growing reputation in debating after emerging as the overall winner of the Tores Foundation Africa Day Debate Tournament hosted at the school on Friday May 22.

The tournament featured three rounds of debating and included eight participating schools from across the region.

Debate dominance

Heathfield High School won all three of its debates, defeating South Peninsula High School, Muizenberg High School and Garlandale High School to claim the tournament trophy.

In April, Heathfield High School celebrated a strong victory after defeating Steenberg High School in a debate held at Steenberg on Friday 17 April, securing a final score of 50–35.

School principal Nadia Aanhuizen praised the learners for their outstanding performance throughout the competition.

“We are exceptionally proud of our learners for the professionalism, confidence, critical thinking, and teamwork they displayed throughout the day,” she said.

Aanhuizen also thanked staff members who assisted in making the event a success by allowing classrooms to be used for the debates.

Tournament victory

“A sincere thank you as well to the teachers who so willingly allowed us to use their classrooms for the debates. Your support played an important role in making the event a success,” she said.

The principal said the school’s debating society continues to grow from strength to strength and is becoming increasingly competitive in the debating arena.

“Heathfield is steadily becoming a force to be reckoned with in the debating space, and we are excited about what lies ahead for our learners and the debating society,” Aanhuizen added.

The tournament formed part of Africa Day celebrations and provided learners with an opportunity to showcase their public speaking, reasoning and teamwork skills while engaging with pupils from other schools.
