Learners and parents from St Agnes Primary School in Woodstock will hit the streets for a 3km fundraising walk on Saturday 25 April.

Proceeds will go towards upgrading the school’s library and improving other much-needed facilities at the school.

The walk will kick off at 9:00 from the school in Dublin Street and is expected to bring together learners, parents, teachers and community members for a morning of fitness and fun.

Chantal Maarman, teacher and fundraising committee member at the school, said the initiative is a first for the school and was introduced as a new way to raise funds while encouraging community participation.

She explained that because the school was established about 127 years ago, it is in constant need of maintenance and upgrades.

“We are always looking at ways to raise funds and this year we decided to do something different. The fun walk is a way for learners and parents to enjoy some time outside and experience a walk in the area,” she said.

Maarman added that the walk also aims to cultivate a culture of fitness, wellness and community involvement among learners and parents, while strengthening the bond between the school and the broader Woodstock community.

According to Maarman, the school is constantly in need of financial support to meet the needs of its learners and maintain the ageing infrastructure.

“We have about 535 learners enrolled at our school and most come from disadvantaged backgrounds. But we are privileged to have some parents and our teachers who always make things happen.

“We have beautiful learners and they keep the school going.”

She added that apart from upgrading the library, the school foyer is also in need of a fresh coat of paint, with several other maintenance projects still on their priority list.

Entry fee is R20 for children and R30 for adults.
