A 46-year-old Heathfield woman’s death, initially believed to be a suicide, is now the subject of a murder case before the court. According to Sgt Wesley Twigg, a spokesperson for the South African Police Service, an adult male was arrested. The accused appeared in the Wynberg Magistrates’ Court on Wednesday 25 March on a charge of murder.
Twigg said the matter was remanded to Wednesday 9 April for a formal bail application. The deceased, Elana Brooke, was found in Heathfield.
Police initially treated the death as suicide before further investigation led to the arrest. The accused, Tristan Perez (24), who is understood to be a local cricketer, appeared in court on the murder charge.
The matter remained before the court. Meanwhile, the Western Province Cricket Association has extended condolences to Brooke’s former husband, David Brooke, and their family. In a statement it described Elana as “a cherished friend of the WPCA family”. She regularly supported matches at WSB Newlands.
“Her unwavering support for our senior teams spoke volumes about her passion for the game and her connection to the Western Province cricket community,” the statement read. The association added that her “impact and spirit will forever remain part of the WPCA community.”
