A 24-year-old local cricketer, Tristan Perez, was granted bail of R5 000 in the Wynberg Magistrates’ Court on Wednesday 9 April.
Perez appeared in connection with a murder case involving the death of Elana Brooke (46). The National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) confirmed that the matter remains under investigation.
NPA spokesperson Eric Ntabazalila said the case is ongoing.
Police arrested Perez after Brooke was found dead at her home in Heathfield. Authorities initially treated the death as a suicide. However, further investigation led to the case being reclassified as murder.
South African Police Service (SAPS) spokesperson Wesley Twigg confirmed the development, adding that investigators linked Perez to the incident after gathering additional evidence.
The Western Province Cricket Association (WPCA) extended condolences to Brooke’s former husband, David Brooke, and their family.
The association described Brooke as “a cherished friend of the WPCA family” who regularly attended matches at WSB Newlands.
It added that her support for senior teams reflected her passion for the sport. “Her impact and spirit will remain part of the community,” the WPCA said.
The case was postponed to Tuesday 2 June for further investigation.
