CAPE TOWN: The 61-year-old male cyclist, Landon La Grange, who was severely injured following a crash involving a minibus taxi on Victoria Road in Camps Bay, on Monday 6 April, died in hospital this morning (7 April).

La Grange was airlifted to hospital after he was struck when a taxi allegedly overtook a vehicle on the coastal road.

Capt Liaan Janse van Renburg, Camps Bay Police Station commander, says a group of 20 cyclists were cycling from Camps Bay to Hout Bay while the taxi travelled from Hout Bay towards Camps Bay at about 08:30.

Neil Robinson, a close friend and chief executive officer of the Pedal Power Association, says La Grange died this morning after his heart “stopped due to his severe injuries”.

“I know his family very well and they are devastated by what happened. He was a good human being, a family man, incredibly talented cyclist and a people’s person,” he explains.

According to Robinson, lawlessness in South Africa is a systemic issue with many similar incidents.

He explains that unless the matter is addressed by the government, nothing will change.

Robinson appeals to road users to use the road “respectfully”.

“Respect one another, respect life, respect that human beings are driving cars and bicycles or walking. People are too quick to be selfish in their actions…and not worrying about the person next to, behind or in front of them.”

According to Janse van Rensburg, the original charge of reckless and negligent driving against the driver will now be changed to culpable homicide.
