Heathfield High soars at Southern Zone Athletics after years away

CAPE TOWN – Heathfield High School made a spectacular comeback to competitive athletics, proving their mettle at the Southern Zone Athletics competition’s A Section at Green Point Stadium on Wednesday 11 February, after a lengthy absence from elite-level competition.

The school’s athletes delivered exceptional performances across multiple events, earning praise from principal Nadia Aanhuizen, who highlighted their “hard work, dedication and fortitude” throughout the day’s competition.

The victories continued with Kazadi Niemabu’s impressive double triumph in both the 400 m and 800 m races, while Reinedi Tufinama secured the 1 500 m title with a commanding performance.

Rising star Sachin Davidson showcased his potential by winning both u-14 100 m and 200 m events with what observers described as “brilliant and effortless” runs, signalling a bright future for the young athlete.

The girls’ contingent proved equally formidable, with Zayaan Ling taking victory in the 100 m and delivering strong performances in the 200 m.

Nokulunga Mbele impressed spectators throughout the day with consistently competitive racing across multiple events.

Field events saw Tristian Petersen claim first place in the u-19 Javelin Throw.

The day concluded with trademark excellence from Heathfield’s relay teams, as the u-19 squad delivered a thrilling victory in the final event, capping off an outstanding day of competition.

Aanhuizen extended gratitude to sponsors and supporters whose contributions made the successful return possible.

“Heathfield High has come a long way,” she noted, expressing optimism about the school’s athletics programme.

“This achievement signals a promising future as the school continues to grow from strength to strength and reach even greater heights in the years ahead.”
