CAPE TOWN – Parkwood Primary School recently marked a milestone – its 65th anniversary – a celebration that brought learners, teachers, parents, alumni and members of the wider community together.
The occasion was both a tribute to the school’s proud history and a moment to look ahead with renewed purpose and ambition.
The festivities, expected to continue throughout the year, reflect six and a half decades of dedication, resilience and achievement.
For those there, the event was not only a celebration but also a deeply meaningful reminder of the school’s enduring legacy and a strong sense of community that has sustained it over the years.
Although some staff members are relatively new to the school, there is a shared recognition that Parkwood Primary’s success has been built on the unwavering commitment of its teachers, past and present. Guided by the school’s motto, “Only the Best is Good Enough,” generations of educators have worked tirelessly to ensure quality education for every learner.
This culture of excellence and perseverance continues to define the institution today. While honouring its past, the school is also focused on the future.
Acting school principal Vaughn Adriaanse said former teachers and alumni “play an invaluable role in preserving Parkwood Primary’s traditions and community spirit.
Even after their years of service at the school, former staff continue to carry the Parkwood Primary spark with them, keeping its values alive wherever they go.
Many remain connected to the school, offering support and encouragement, and carrying a continued sense of pride in its achievements.” He said a key priority is to re-engage with the Western Cape Education Department regarding the long-awaited construction of a new school building.
Originally planned several years ago, the project was delayed by the Covid-19 pandemic and later impacted by provincial infrastructure challenges following widespread flooding.
Despite these setbacks, the need for modern facilities remains urgent, and the school is determined to revive discussions to ensure an improved learning environment for future generations.
The anniversary celebration itself was filled with memorable moments. Learners played a central role, showcasing their talents through performances, poetry, and dance, while demonstrating admirable discipline and pride.
A spirit of unity was evident as the school community came together to enjoy the day’s programme, which included blessings and messages of encouragement from local faith leaders.
One of the highlights was an inspiring address by a former learner who rose from humble beginnings in the Parkwood community to establish a successful marketing agency.
His story served as a powerful example to current learners, encouraging them to dream big and believe in their potential.
The event also highlighted the important role played by alumni and former teachers, whose continued involvement helps preserve the school’s traditions and values.
Their ongoing support reinforces the idea that Parkwood Primary is more than just a place of learning; it is a lifelong community.
As the school looks to the future its message is clear: unity, determination, and a shared commitment to excellence will guide the next chapter.
With a strong foundation and a proud history behind it, Parkwood Primary is well-positioned to continue shaping lives for many years to come.
The celebration of 65 years is not just about reflecting on the past, but about building an even stronger legacy for generations ahead.
