ST FRANCIS BAY – Legendary Eastern Province golfer, Lynn Slogrove, of the St Francis Links Club, has decided to retire and will be sadly missed when the provincial women’s team step up to the national A division next year.

Recently, she was part of the triumphant EP side that won the inaugural Mid-Amateur Inter-provincial tournament (for players 30 years and older) at the Peacanwood Country Club for the very first time.

Lynn Slogrove bows out after four decades of provincial golf

When EP face the big guns in Boland next year, Lynn’s absence will be clearly felt. Her experience and talent were invaluable over many years.

“Yes, it was an emotional decision to bow out. I will be 74 next year, and that will be too much of a challenge. Actually, I have really extended my provincial golf career way beyond expectation,” she said.

EP golfing legend leaves behind an extraordinary record

Slogrove is not only a golf legend, but also in hockey when she played at the highest level.

As a hockey player, she represented Border Schools in 1968 and 1969, the Border senior team in 1975 and 1976; Peninsula (1977); Western Province (1978); Eastern Province (1979-1985) and SA Indoor (1985). She also played for the SA Universities around 1984.

Lynn then turned to golf, introducing a remarkable career. She started golf in 1984 and represented EP from 1985 to 2026 and captained the team on multiple occasions. Lynn has won at least 45 Club Championships at three Eastern Province clubs between 1987 and 2025.

From hockey fields to golf courses, a remarkable sporting career

She also played for the South African Invitational team in matches against Zimbabwe and the Springbok team in the early 1990s. She has been Humewood Golf Club’s champion at least 25 times, the first in 1987, and the latest in 2025. And in the process, she has also won multiple Strokeplay Championships at Humewood over 41 years.

At St. Francis Bay, she won 13 out of 14 Club Championships between 1997 and 2010 – a record that could stand for many years to come. One of the highlights of her career was when she represented BMW South Africa at the BMW Golf Cup International in the World Final in Singapore in 2012.

There she received the award for Best Woman Player at the tournament.

Eastern Province pays tribute to a mentor and role model

When he was told of Lynn’s retirement, EP president Karl du Preez said, “It’s a privilege to acknowledge Lynn Slogrove as she steps away from competitive golf. For more than four decades, she has been an extraordinary ambassador for Eastern Province golf. Her record speaks for itself. But Lynn’s greatest legacy extends beyond her achievements.

“She has been a role model to generations of golfers through her dedication, sportsmanship, humility and willingness to mentor and support young players. Her retirement from competitive golf will undoubtedly leave a significant gap in the Eastern Province.

“We will miss seeing her compete, lead and inspire, but her contribution to our game will remain part of the EPGolf legacy for many years to come,”said Du Preez.

“On behalf of EPGolf, thank you, Lynn, for everything you have given to our sport and to the golfers who have followed in your footsteps.

“We wish you every happiness in this next chapter — although I suspect this is not quite the last we will see of you on a golf course!” he concluded.
