The Parklands community in Cape Town is still in mourning following the tragic death of 17-year-old Connor Niske, a respected head boy and outstanding learner at Parklands College, who died last Sunday after sustaining a fatal head wound believed to be a bullet injury. Police have opened an inquest into the circumstances surrounding his death.
Table View police confirmed that officers attended a local medical facility at approximately 00:51 on Sunday, where the teenager had already succumbed to his injuries. An inquest docket has since been registered and the matter is under investigation.
A young leader remembered
Parklands College paid tribute to Connor, describing him as an exceptional young man who made a lasting impact on both Parklands College and Christopher Robin Pre-Primary School.
“He was involved in many aspects of school life, including robotics, engineering and public speaking,” the school said.
The institution said Connor will be remembered for the values he embodied.
“Connor led with kindness, integrity and humility, bringing joy, warmth and positivity to everyone who had the privilege of knowing him.”
The school added that his dedication and spirit set him apart within the school community.
“His enthusiasm, dedication and readiness to serve others made a lasting impact on our community. Connor’s resilience will be greatly missed, and his absence will be felt deeply by learners, educators, staff and friends.”
Robotics captain and academic achiever
Beyond the classroom, Connor was well known as captain of the school’s robotics team, the Hyperion Bots.
The team competes in engineering and technology competitions where learners design, build and programme robots to compete against other schools.
His involvement in robotics formed part of a broader academic and leadership profile that made him a respected figure among peers and educators.
Community in shock and mourning
News of Connor’s death has sent shockwaves through the Parklands community, with tributes pouring in from learners, parents, educators and friends.
“We welcome all alumni who wish to pay their respects and stand together in remembrance of Connor,” the school said.
A special tribute assembly in his honour was held on Friday 12 June.
