As a dreamer Philda Adriaanse vividly sees how she can make a difference in the lives of others. Twenty years ago she had the calling to create a safe harbour for neglected children. Today she runs Soutkorrels Maak ’n Verskil, an organisation giving children the space to do their schoolwork, get a meal and learn about Christ. Adriaanse says sometimes all a child needs is to be shown love. “My calling is to help children. I started Soutkorrels with my sister Mercy who has since passed away, and our goal was to make a difference in the lives of children who don’t know what it is to feel valued. We serve the children of the Lover’s Lane informal settlements and flats in Paarl. They struggle with many things, but we believe our support positively impacts their lives.” For Adriaanse seeing the children who come through Soutkorrels’ door succeed creates the best feeling. “Seeing a child move from difficult circumstances and building a better life for themselves is pure joy. My advice to the kids is to work hard, and don’t fall into the same circumstances as your parents. Each year, Valcare coordinates the Proteas of the Valley Women’s Month campaign to honour and celebrate remarkable women in the Cape Winelands. These are women who, like the protea, flourish and flower despite difficult conditions. From the nominations received an independent committee selected 15 women who are making a great difference in their communities. Paarl Post shared their stories these past two weeks.
