Learners at Wellington High last week at the school’s holiday programme.

Instead of a relaxing week-long holiday at home, learners of Weltevrede Secondary and Wellington High spent their time at their various schools participating in a school holiday programme last week.

Wellington Community Forum (WCF) together with the Cape Winelands Education Department prepared a packed programme for the learners.

Hilton Anthony, a spokesperson for the forum, says the educational programme included topics such as peer pressure, moral values, substance abuse, HIV/Aids, sexual abuse, gender violence, teenage pregnancy, gender discrimination, conflict resolution, life skills, self-esteem building, truancy, gangsterism and bullying.

“We believe these programmes will help to change the environment in our schools, so that incidents of bullying and other inappropriate behaviour are reduced,” he said.

“Through them we can begin to create a generation of young people who will value themselves and treat others with kindness, dignity and respect.”

The WCF emphasised that today’s children are tomorrow’s leaders.

The organisation further encouraged the community, public officials, educators and parents to help ensure these children grow up to respect themselves and the rights of others in their midst and elsewhere.
