The Western Cape High Schools Championships, an event that traditionally takes place at Green Point Stadium in Cape Town, was shifted at the very last moment to Dal Josaphat Stadium in Paarl.
Fairoez Cassiem, Secretary: Western Cape Schools Athletics, said in a statement this week the championships will now take place in Paarl on 3-5 March, as the Green Point Sports Stadium would, apparently, be “too busy to accommodate an athletics event.
“Despite being in possession of the events permit, and after several appeals to various parties, we have not succeeded in convincing the City of Cape Town of the impact of their decision.
“Western Cape Schools Athletics has had to make a tough call and decided on Sunday 27 February to move the high-schools championships to Dal Josaphat to accommodate the full programme.
“We understand the impact it has on all our arrangements, so please take note the full day of competition will now be Friday 4 March 2022.”
Cassiem said this was not an easy decision, but it was due to the duress exercised by the City of Cape Town, which had actually issued an events permit for Green Point Stadium.
