The top matriculants and schools of the Western Cape were praised and awarded for their hard work during the provincial 2021 National Senior Certificate awards. The ceremony took place on 3 February at Premier Alan Winde’s residence, Leeuwenhof in Cape Town.

A few local learners and schools from Paarl were also in attendance and were among those who received accolades.

The top matriculant in the country and the province, Ulrich le Roux, from Paarl Boys’ High School was given a special ministerial award for his outstanding performance in a specified subject — accounting. He was also identified as the top candidate from a public school.

Labori High School was recognised as one of the top three technical schools in the province for its excellence in academic performance, with an NSC enrolment of less than 30 candidates. The school came in third place.

In the same category the top 20 non-technical schools were listed that have achieved excellent academic results. These schools used an inclusive basket of quality criteria, and have an NSC enrolment of 30 or more candidates. Paarl Girls’ High School and La Rochelle Girls’ High School were placed in 11th and 15th place respectively.

The top 40 candidates who obtained excellent results in their six subjects, and fulfilled the requirements for the award of the National Senior Certificate were also acknowledged. In this category Cyle Hein Edwards from Klein Nederburg Secondary School came in 4th place and Alexandra van Stelten from La Rochelle Girls’ High School in 31st place.
