Opportunistic thieves are now targeting ambulances for their medical supplies, but in one instance such a thief was caught red-handed before he had a chance to run off with much needed life-saving supplies.
According to Paarl police spokesperson Captain Louise du Plessis the suspect attempted to steal items from an ambulance around 01:10 at a local hospital on Sunday morning (7 May).
She related that Ricardo Sampson, who appeared in court for malicious damage to property the following day, was caught opening the door of the ambulance by the driver.
“The driver immediately gave chase after the suspect tried to flee. The suspect threw a brick at the ambulance, which caused a window to break.”
The suspect was caught, added Du Plessis, and arrested for malicious damage to property. Sampson has been released and warned to reappear in court on 23 June.
