Last Wednesday (15 February), a suspect was successfully captured by security officers in Groenvlei, Paarl North, following a home invasion in the early hours.

Paarl police spokesperson Capt Louise du Plessis, said the suspect, a man from Mbekweni, had gained access to the house around 05:50 on 15 February.

She said the complainant’s cellphone-linked house alarm showed a zone in the house had been triggered.

On investigating, the complainant was confronted by a stranger who had gained access to the house.

“The suspect hit the complainant in the face, before running off with his cellphone,” Du Plessis said.

“The security company responded quickly to the alarm and soon found the suspect not far from the residence in possession of the stolen cellphone.”

The suspect, Thabiso Batshani, appeared in the Paarl Magistrates’ Court on charges of house robbery and assault, and has been remanded in custody until 24 February.
