The much needed reconstruction work currently being done on the Wemmershoek Road opposite Boschenmeer Estate, is expected to be completed next year.
According to Jandré Bakker, Directorate: Operational Support at the Department of Infrastructure in the Western Cape, the scope of work broadly includes the upgrading of about 4,10 km of the road from the N1 until the Kliprug Road, into a dual carriageway.
“This work will include the realignment of the road, construction of various major intersections, and the construction and upgrading of existing stormwater infrastructure,” Bakker said.
Resurfacing, rebuilding and widening to include a shoulder are also on the cards.
The upgrade will be welcomed by many road users who daily travel between Paarl and Franschhoek as the Wemmershoek Road over the years have become increasingly busy not only because of the estates on the road, but also with the opening of the new mall there.
According to Bakker the estimated cost of the work is valued at R158 million.
The anticipated completion date is 20 January 2024.
