A trauma-release therapy technique that is gaining popularity around the world is launching soon in South Africa. An Australian-based breathwork facilitator, Schanelle Denton, is in South Africa for a limited time to share her knowledge of cosmic breathwork, and will be in Wellington on Saturday 18 March.
“A lot of books have been written around how the body holds on to trauma,” says Denton, who focuses on Eastern philosophy and healing modalities that work in alignment with Western cognitive pscychology. “This technique, cosmic breathwork, allows for release of whatever the body holds onto emotionally.”
Denton has trained and qualified in breathwork facilitation in California and has studied psychology, healing modalities, yoga and somatic therapies in South Africa, London, Peru and Australia since 2005. She travels the world teaching intensive transformational programmes, breathing techniques and tools that assist in managing anxiety, depression, PTSD and stress management such as Cosmic Breathwork, neuro-linguistic programming (NLP) techniques, chakra balancing, pranayama, somatic movement therapy and animal therapy.
“I am really happy to be bringing this technique to South Africa as I feel collectively we hold on to so much trauma in the country,” South African-born Denton, who has lived in Australia since 2011, explained. “Breathwork is such a powerful tool to learn and incorporate into a person’s experience. It is all about creating a new psychosomatic psychological space for the individual.
“The goal of all my teachings is to help students of all ages nurture an attitude of resilience, inner joy, gratitude and compassion towards themselves and others. Most people leave Cosmic Breathwork sessions feeling clearer, calmer, more content and relaxed. By changing patterns of breathing, it is possible to restore balance, calm an agitated mind, relieve symptoms of stress, anxiety and depression, improve physical health and endurance, elevate performance and relationships, connect to your highest self and source for deep healing, clarity and power.”
The workshop takes place from 10:00 to 12:30 at the Avo Centre at 27 Distillery Road in Wellington. The cost is R450 per person and tickets can be booked through Quicket (https://www.quicket.co.za/events/105426-cosmic-breathwork), Denton also offers one-on-one sessions for breathwork integration and longer courses for sustainable stress management solutions.
