The pied pipers of Paarl were seen again this past weekend practising their bagpipes near the Berg River in Paarl. The trio are currently practicing for the Highland Gathering which is held in Amanzimtoti every year. The pipe bands (and dancers) will compete with individual/solo piping on Sunday. Saturday the bands on different levels compete i.e. School, Grade 4, being the lowest grading, Grade 3 are good bands and Grade 2 – top-class bands South Africa do not have a Grade 1 band. At the end of Saturday, the bands all “gather” as one. There could be as many as 120 pipers – and this excludes drummers – and all play together. There are 100’s of spectators. It’s an experience second only to the Springboks playing (and winning) against New Zealand at Newlands! They are from left Colin Andrew, Les Williams and Ramon Allen.Photo: Lise Beyers
